AI Hackathon 2024
Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Real-World Applications
The 2024 Inter-University AI Hackathon centred on a practical question: how can students turn artificial intelligence into useful tools for real-world needs in Kenya? The result was an edition focused on application, accessibility and deployment.

FOCUS AREAS
From theory to practical application
The programme challenged teams to move beyond AI as a classroom concept. Projects were expected to connect a technical approach with a clear user, a practical setting and a credible pathway to use.
A broad set of public challenges
Education, enterprise, cybersecurity, agriculture, food security, health, governance, transport and sustainability formed the challenge landscape. This made the edition a meeting point for technical students and people with different domain perspectives.
Accessibility as technical design
The legacy material highlights offline and low-connectivity use cases, including sound recognition and crop-disease tools. These examples reflected a key principle: a useful AI product must work in the conditions where people will actually use it.
Responsible AI in practice
The strongest projects had to consider more than accuracy. Usability, privacy, inclusion, resilience and the effect of a system on real people are part of what makes an AI solution trustworthy.
Cross-campus collaboration
The inter-university setting brought different skills into the room. It created opportunities for teams to learn from one another and for mentors to see emerging talent across more than one institution.
A platform for proof of work
The 2024 edition reinforced KIUP's longer-term purpose: a student prototype should become durable proof of work, not disappear after a final presentation.

Conclusion
AI Hackathon 2024 showed that applied AI is most valuable when it is built around genuine needs, understandable to users and designed for the realities of its environment.
